Where to stay and what to see
Tortola is the biggest and the busiest
island in the BVI. Its coast is much
indented and with the islands that go
with it, the choice of anchorages is huge.
A crest of steep, but not very high, hills
runs from E to W along the length of the
island. The airport (Beef Island Airport)
is the hub for the BVI and has been built
on a short, flat bit of land on its
eponymous island at the east tip of
Tortola. The runway has just been
lengthened, but it’s not expected that it
will be able to handle jumbo jets.

       Road Town
Most of Tortola’s life takes place around
the capital, Road Town, which lies at the
head of Road Harbour’s spacious bay.
The settlement of small, brilliantly
coloured houses is focussed on the main
street, which runs along the shore and
connects the marina of Fort Burt on one
side with the concentration of yacht
business at Wickham’s Cay N of the
town. It’s here that you’ll find most of
the shops and restaurants. A wide level
bit of ground next door to Wickham’s
Cay has been recently developed for
government offices and a big dock for
cruise liners. Almost every day another
cruise ship comes in and disgorges its
passengers onto the small town’s streets.
